Alchemical Vessels

I was fortunate enough to attend a wonderful benefit event at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts. The Smith Center is a fabulous neighborhood resource that I am quite fond of. I discovered the place when I first learned that I had melanoma and have been to many great community functions that they put on. In addition to nutrition, cooking, retreats, and art classes, they also have a gallery that has rotating exhibits.

Tonight the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery featured an exhibit, called Alchemical Vessels, of 125 vessels created by local artists. The DC Arts Commission gave a grant for 125 white ceramic bowls as a starting place. The center then conducted a workshop for the artists, to explain the intention of the exhibit. They were each to create a unique piece that came from a place of healing.

The vessels were selected in the order in which tickets were purchased. I had lucky number 12, in the second group to select their pieces to take home.

I am quite in love with my piece, called Under Water Over Dreams, by Barbara Frank. It is made of mixed media: graphite, water color, gouache, fluid acrylic, wax varnish, curly willow branches. The branches are woven through the bowl itself, so the piece has a great deal of texture. From the two pictures you can see that it changes depending on the light.

I am looking forward to finding the perfect place in our home for the piece. I love to consider the healing energy that it will bring.

In healing,

Miel
