Condemnation of the Attacks in Guinea

As I settle into being in West Africa once again, I feel obliged to pay tribute to recent events in Guinea.

If you didn’t catch it in the news last week, Guinea faced some tumultuous times. Stadiums, unfortunately, already have a poor association in my mind. They make me think of the beheadings and stonings that women faced during the times of the reign of Taliban in Afghanistan.

Nearby in Guinea, the incidents are no less brutal. The tally stands at nearly 160 killed during the protests, while unknown numbers of women were brutally gang raped in the the broad daylight of public spectacle.

It seems impossible that this could happen, and yet incidents like this are far too common around the world. Once is already too much.

It makes me wonder what could have been done to prevent such an incident. How do you explain that a woman’s body is not for the taking, to rape and pillage as you like. While it seems impossible that this would need to be taught, it must be done to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
