Summer Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossom time feels like a whole season in and of itself to me. This year has been marked by the late coming blooms. I was glad to see the bloom arrive twenty days later than last year, as we were able to make it to Hawaii and back to still find the blossoms on their way to peak.

I ran down to the tidal basin before sunrise, covering the 2.5 miles in 24 minutes, even as I avoided the pre-dawn motorcade as I passed by the White House. It was standing room only at the Tidal Basin, but the mood was friendly and jovial. I was sweating even in a tank top even before the sun was up.

I took a boatload of pictures. Every year’s pictures are pretty much the same, but it is still fun to capture them.

Last year I ran down to the the tidal basin at sunrise for the first time. A massive thunderstorm loomed in the sky and broke out in a downpour the moment I got out the door. I slogged through the rain, crossing paths with other runners willing to brave the elements. The tidal basin had a handful of people, nothing like the standing room only that was present this year.

Cheers,

Miel
