Bhutto Assassination

The aftermath of the Bhutto assassination in Pakistan seems to make Afghanistan look like a vacation destination. I am working on getting visas for a Singapore group departing soon and had considered going to Karachi-I to get them expedited. Given the current situation I won’t be sending them there at all. According to yahoo more than 500 cars had been burned, 12 banks, and rampant chaos. Here is the latest on yahoo now.

According to the World Public Opinion Poll only 44 percent of Pakistanis favor sending the Pakistani army to the Northwestern tribal areas to “pursue and capture al Qaeda fighters.” Only 48 percent would allow the Pakistan army to act against “Taliban insurgents who have crossed over from Afghanistan.”

The whole thing reminds me of being in Ghana and being thankful that while the rest of Africa seemed to be declining all around us, that we were on a safe little haven. I’m afraid that is not the case here though. More like just taking Afghanistan out of the direct headlines for a moment. The good news is that the security report issued today by our security company seemed to lean towards the likelihood that this would have little immediate impact on Kabul. If it did have an impact it likely would be on the border.

With neighbors like this, who need enemies.

We live in a scary world but we go out and do our jobs every day and life goes on. Be careful and be safe but don’t be intimidated.
